Madeleines

Our History

Imagine the kind of alchemy that occurs when an inventor and entrepreneur marries a soprano and natural baker, and you'll catch a glimpse of Don and Susie Morris, visionaries and founders of Donsuemor.

In 1976, Don and Susie embarked on a business venture—making madeleines for the local charcuterie, Pig by the Tail, in Berkeley's gourmet ghetto. Susie began baking five dozen madeleines each week in her home kitchen. As the community began discovering these delightful treats, Don decided that it was time to find more stores. He would pack his Volkswagen bus with boxes of madeleines, encourage storeowners to taste, and always a box was sold and a new store added.

Susie's madeleines and Don's talent for all things mechanical brought them rapidly through a succession of larger bakeries. Don and Susie recruited a team of enthusiastic and dedicated inventors and bakers to be a part of their vision. Over the years, the mission of Donsuemor crystallized into what the company represents today—to make the most delicious, highest quality, authentic, and beautiful madeleine available. Today, Donsuemor madeleines are enjoyed throughout North America.

Today, Donsuemor carries on Don and Susie's vision of baking so people can discover the satisfying experience of eating a more delicious product. In 2009, led by their creative French pastry chef, Donsuemor launched the financier-inspired French Almond Cake, its first product in 30 years. The following year came the Cute Cakes, an amalgam of cupcakes and petits fours. Both products live up to our high standards of quality and uniqueness.
